Announcements of the 2015 Nobel Prize laureates

During this week the Nobel laureates of 2015 will be announced starting today with the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine. The City of Stockholm is home of the Nobel Prize and the Nobel Week in Stockholm in December is when science is celebrated more than any other time of the year. Prominent research and historic discoveries are celebrated when the world’s eyes are directed towards Stockholm. It is hard to overstate the significance of the Nobel Prize.

Since its establishment, the Nobel Prize has had a close connection with academia. The Nobel Committee for Physiology or Medicine is based at Karolinska Institutet and the Nobel Prizes in Chemistry, Physics and the Sveriges Riksbank Prize in Economic Sciences in Memory of Alfred Nobel are all given out by committees at the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences. The Swedish Academy appoints the Nobel laureate in literature and the Nobel Committee for Physiology /Medicine at Karolinska Institutet appoint the laureate in physiology or medicine. In these committees more than 70 (out of 95 in total) professors from Stockholm universities are participating.

The Nobel Prize is the science award above all else, and to prominent universities around the world the Nobel Prize is a proof of successful research. Several of the highest ranked universities are marketing themselves by stating how many Nobel laureates they have had over the years. Stockholm is standing strong internationally. Throughout the years 13 Nobel Prizes have been awarded to persons affiliated with the universities and university colleges in Stockholm:

Svante Arrhenius, chemistry 1903, Stockholm University

Hans von Euler-Chelpin, chemistry 1929, Stockholm University

George de Hevesy, chemistry 1943, Stockholm University

Hugo Theorell, physiology or medicine 1955, Karolinska Institutet

Ragnar Granit, physiology or medicine 1967, Karolinska Institutet.

Ulf von Euler, physiology or medicine 1970, Karolinska Institutet.

Hannes Alfvén, physics 1970, KTH Royal Institute of Technology.

Gunnar Myrdal, Sveriges Riksbank Prize in Economic Sciences in Memory of Alfred Nobel 1974, Stockholm University and Stockholm School of Economics.

Bertil Ohlin, Sveriges Riksbank Prize in Economic Sciences in Memory of Alfred Nobel 1977, Stockholm School of Economics.

Sune K. Bergström, physiology or medicine 1980, Karolinska Institutet.

Bengt I. Samuelsson, physiology or medicine 1980, Karolinska Institutet.

Paul Crutzen, chemistry 1995, Stockholm University.

Tomas Tranströmer, literature 2011, Stockholm University.

Also worth mentioning is Bert Bolin, founder of the UN climate panel IPCC and its first chairman 1983. Mr. Bolin was active at Stockholm University. IPPC received the Nobel Peace Prize in 2007.

In Stockholm, the Nobel Week is an important and festive time of year. The city and Stockholm’s universities and university colleges are deeply involved in the festivities and related events. On the day of the Nobel Prize Award Ceremony, December the 10th, the grand Nobel Banquet is held at the Stockholm City Hall. The banquet is followed by the Students’ Nobel Night Cap at Stockholm University. At Karolinska Institutet and Stockholm University the student unions are organizing ‘Lucia ball’ on December 13th where several Nobel laureates participate and celebrate.


Stockholm Academic Forum represents 17 Stockholm universities and higher education institutions and the City of Stockholm.Stockholm Academic Forum also promotes Stockholm as an important national and international academic centre.
